Review

Portraits are stupid. They have longer texts about the person who is portrayed than the artist who did the picture. In the NPG most seem to be by artists who are reactionaries trying to be a bit contemporary (like the new painting of JK Rowling which is made up like theatre set with the all the bits cut out to make it look 3D). Some homeless drunk type guy was looking at a poor portrait by A Raho of Dame Judi Dench, and said to me great actress isnt she aggressively, and then left swearing with a can of beer in his hand. There is something reallly good in the NPG, temporarily, Jews of the 20th C by A Warhol, it seems like a dumb idea, and the messed round with screen prints would normally be tacky, but somehow it'sjust right, like much of what Warhol did.
