Cumberland's press release is fresh and funny. He has a way of being stylish whilst affecting nonchalance. His paintings have for as long as I have seen them, been attractive examples of painting. Painting, painting, painting. Seems to be what he likes. In this show called "carry on painting" he has stuck print-outs of people (eg a nurse) to his Matisse/Picassoey paintings, which don't add much. Cumberland is a good painter and one wonders whether he is too good for the dumb taste of the general and art buying public.
