Review

As April Fool’s Day fast approaches it seems a good time to reflect on what I have done so far this year. It seems not a lot, except for DIY and working for other people to earn money. Seeing crocuses reach for the sky from black earth still triggers an intense childish exhilaration that makes me want to run around like a lunatic and pick a fight with some older kids. I can feel the sunshine change my body’s chemistry like watching kitchen roll soaking up red wine. Things I have neglected over the not remarkably cold winter months include friends, artwork, writing, exhibition visits, reading, and constructive thinking beyond DIY solutions. What I have done this year to excess is create dust, paint (walls), clean, scrub and nurture an eBay obsession - do I really need a Blue Moon Poole pottery gravy boat or pair of Appliance Rollers, for god’s sake? The big question is: is it too late to awaken? Is it seasonal or am I just getting more lazy and boring? I could call all my friends and arrange to meet for drinks – but will conversation be difficult to sustain now that I am out of practice with socialising – will I feel a need to quickly scurry away? How many times can I afford to go out this week anyway? What’s the most important art to see right now and can I be bothered to travel across London to spend five minutes seeing it? Do only little furry animals hibernate or do upright mammals that wear jeans and drink coffee also do it?
