Review

Remakes give us a chance to see how cultures/contexts times treat the same stories. Funny how new pop movies are so completely modernist , in a Greenbergian sense, hermetically sealed from reality and utterly self-referential. The tension of humans experiencing things such as pain or imprisonment has gone, the cartoonish hammering of faces and testicles is a reference to brutality in prison movies, never for a moment to we sense the fear or empathy for the characters involved. The death of one of the major stars of this film, played by Chris Rock, is passed over in two to three minutes, setting us up for another plot point, and stories are just scenes. A minor classic of our times.
