Review

Amis is always the same, reassuringly readable prose, boy in pursuit of girl, social class clash, humour, an old sods desire to annoy the priggish, a non-negatable intelligence behind that. Oh what he could have been. If he had n't been so English in his desire not to be too clever to too serious. Lucky Jim is great and the rest is minor, ripples in the pond, what if he had soared, risked pretentiousness, tried to say it all. What remains is entertainment.
