Review

Big display of pageantry on the White House lawn, big welcome from Bush with Chinese translation. Slight nauseous awkwardness of the man behind detention without trial, Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib asking for China to embrace human rights. Then Hu Jintao got up to speak and, very audibly, a woman started screaming at him in Chinese. Bush and Jintao looked concerned, but Bush assured him 'You're OK'. The woman managed to go for quite awhile before being led away by burly military police, looking poignantly small and vulnerable. A very good protest. The Chinese are going to have to do some clever editing to present a version clean of it to the Chinese people and, in the West, it effectively hijacks the story.
